Which LED downlights work best in a kitchen

How to lay out downlights in the kitchen

The key in a kitchen is to keep your own shadow from falling on the countertop. That's why downlights are placed in a line about 40–60 cm from the wall cabinets, right above the edge of the countertop. If you have an island or peninsula, a row of adjustable spotlights above it takes care of task lighting. For the rest of the space, a few evenly spaced general light points are enough.

How to choose LED downlights for the kitchen

Color temperature

Neutral 4000K light works very well in the kitchen: it's bright and restful. If the kitchen is open to the living room, a CCT model lets you switch to 3000K when you're done cooking.

Color rendering index (CRI)

A high CRI (90 or more) helps you judge how well done the meat is or see the true color of fruit and vegetables.

Wattage and lumens

For home kitchens, well-distributed 7 to 12 W downlights are usually enough; in large kitchens or those with high ceilings, go up to 15–20 W.

IP rating and cut-out diameter
